Art and / of Failure: When the End is the Beginning
In the world of art, failure can seem like a career-ending event, but for some, it's the moment when a successful career truly begins.
Art and/of Failure explores how artists and art professionals turned epic failures into turning moments that shaped their path. From bankruptcy, scandal, rejection, and ridicule to worldwide fame, this talk highlights how failure became a vital force driving bold creativity, pushing boundaries, and, in some cases, rewriting the narrative of success.
We will discuss:
• How restoration gone wrong turned into an unexpected success, and an 80-year-old volunteer, who attempted to restore a mural at a local cathedral in Spain is now called "the new Goya."
• How failed artworks turned into world masterpieces and what was Van Gogh's real opinion about his Starry Night.
• How failed artworks inspire collectors to create "Museums of Failure" to celebrate botched works of art.
• How artists confront their fear of failure and inspire others to look that fear in the eye.
• How creative world figures, such as Anna Wintour, Elizabeth Arden, Anna Delvey, Chris Gardner, Margaret Keane re-invent themselves after what seemed to be the end of their careers.
• The role of scandal and controversy in shaping public perceptions of success.
• The intersection of art, crime, and fame, and how figures like Anna Delvey turn negative press into opportunities.
Join us for an inspiring journey through art history and contemporary culture, with a secret artist guest, as we examine how struggle, scandal, and setbacks can serve as the ultimate catalyst for groundbreaking work.
